From Ammon:
Wow! It has been so amazing getting to know Kael Ammon Gifford. The last time I wrote Katie and I were at the Riverton Hospital and I was really nervous about Katies and the baby! That night of early May 1st morning was a long night. There was a bench that I slept on in Katie's delivery room and every few hours the nurse would come in and check on Katie and see how far she was dilated. When the time finally came, I was so happy to be a part of the action. I was at Katie's side the whole time and did my best to help. At one point the nurse had said how she could feel his head and I was a bit jealous so she had me put on a glove and I got to feel him. The whole morning I felt so good. Shaky but not nervous. To me, this was the most exciting experience. Some times I was asked if I was going to pass out but I didn't feel that way at all. While Katie was pushing I remember first seeing Kael's head and it looked so hairy to me and so amazing. This little life that Katie and I had created. Suddenly the doctor cut Katie and shortly after Kael's head popped right out and then the rest of his body slipped right through in like a second. Kael cried and it was the most amazing sound in the world. I am so glad we got it all on camera. Sadly for Katie, she didn't get to hold Kael long. He was taken and weighed and measured and he got his first shot. Katie had to stay on the mag because it is supposed to help but it really made her sick and at one point when we were moving her to the recovery room she passed out twice and it scared me. After the second time she wok up and threw up. I was holding the bag at her mouth. The next few night went quickly and doctors and nurses cared for us the whole time. Kael spent lots of time sleeping and being held by us and family. I assisted in his first bath, and I forgot to mention that I cut his umbilical cord. I was really surprised when Dr. Merril asked me if I wanted to. It was a yellow looking hose. The night we came home Kael did not poop or pee and we were so scared that we stayed up all night. Luckily we had a pediatric appointment the next day and we were then comforted by Dr. Duffy. Kael's weight was low but he then recommended a lactation specialist named Karen and she helped us so much. Finally he was eating something besides air. It wasn't easy at first but Katie has the hang of it now. at our two week visit, Dr. Duffy was surprised that Kael had gained a whole pound. He said Kael was doing great. actually Kael had gained more because at his first visit, Kael was 6 lbs even and now he was 7lbs 9 oz. Kael is almost 6 weeks old now and besides a little annoying cold he has been great. We love him so much. He is now over 9 lbs and bald because he lost a lot of hair but he is so cute. So grateful he is here and safe. Although some nights are difficult and we haven't slept the whole night in a while, it as all been worth it.
